What eclipses mean in astrology
A solar eclipse happens at a new Moon, when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun and blocks some or all of its light. In a total eclipse the Moon covers the Sun completely. In an annular eclipse the Moon is a little too far from Earth to cover it, so a bright ring stays visible. A lunar eclipse happens at a full Moon, when Earth's shadow falls on the Moon. All three lunar eclipses in 2027 are penumbral, which means the Moon passes only through the faint outer part of Earth's shadow.
Eclipses come in seasons about six months apart, when new and full Moons line up with the lunar nodes, the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path. In 2027 the North Node is in Aquarius and the South Node is in Leo, so three of the five eclipses fall in those two signs. Astrologers read the North Node as the direction you are growing toward and the South Node as what you are ready to release.
Eclipses are treated as turning points because they tend to speed up changes that were already underway. Their effects are usually read over the following months, and the house an eclipse falls in shows which part of life it touches.
February 6: Annular solar eclipse in Aquarius
The year opens with an annular solar eclipse on February 6 at 17 degrees Aquarius. Along a path across Chile, Argentina and the Atlantic Ocean, the Moon covers the center of the Sun and leaves a thin ring of light, and at its longest the ring phase lasts 7 minutes 51 seconds. A partial eclipse is visible across a wider area of South America, Antarctica and western and southern Africa. In astrology this new Moon sits close to the North Node in Aquarius, which gives it a forward-looking quality. Aquarius covers friendship, community, technology and long-range plans, so it is a good moment to commit to a goal you have been circling, join a group or change how you work with other people. Mercury stations retrograde three days later, on February 9, and new plans made now may go through a round of revision before they settle.
February 20: Penumbral lunar eclipse in Virgo
Two weeks later, on February 20, a penumbral lunar eclipse takes place at 2 degrees Virgo. It is visible from the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia, but penumbral eclipses are subtle. The Moon passes through the outer edge of Earth's shadow and picks up a faint gray shading, mostly on one side, which is easy to miss unless you know to look, and many people will see what looks like an ordinary full Moon. In astrology, a full Moon in Virgo with the Sun in Pisces pairs Virgo's practical side with Pisces's intuition. Virgo covers work, health routines and being useful, and this eclipse tends to show where a routine has stopped working or where you have been carrying more than your share. Mercury is retrograde on this date, so changes started now often make more sense after it turns direct on March 3. Astrologers usually read a penumbral eclipse as a mild one, closer to a nudge to tidy up.
July 18: Penumbral lunar eclipse in Capricorn
The second eclipse season begins on July 18 with a penumbral lunar eclipse at 26 degrees Capricorn. It is visible from eastern Africa, Asia, Australia and the Pacific, so most of Europe and the Americas will miss it. Like February's lunar eclipse, it shows up as a faint shading on the full Moon, with none of the red color of a total lunar eclipse. With the Sun in Cancer and the Moon in Capricorn, this full Moon sets home and family against career and responsibility, and it often raises a question of balance: how much of you goes to work and how much to the people at home. Capricorn also rules structure and long-term commitments, so a plan or obligation that has run its course may become obvious. It falls about two weeks before the total solar eclipse, and the days between the two suit finishing things before something new begins.
August 2: Total solar eclipse in Leo
The total solar eclipse on August 2 at 9 degrees Leo is the biggest sky event of 2027. The path of totality crosses Morocco, Spain, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia, and at its longest the Sun is fully covered for 6 minutes 23 seconds, which is long for a total eclipse. A partial eclipse is visible across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and western and southern Asia. Any solar eclipse, including the annular one in February, is only safe to look at through certified eclipse glasses or a proper solar filter. The one exception is totality itself, when the Sun is completely covered, and the glasses go back on as soon as the first bright edge returns. In astrology this new Moon sits near the South Node in Leo, which ties it to release and to dropping an old way of seeking attention or approval. Leo rules creativity, romance, children, play and self-expression, and the eclipse tends to mark an ending or a fresh start in those areas, often one that is already underway.
August 17: Penumbral lunar eclipse in Aquarius
The last eclipse of 2027 is a penumbral lunar eclipse on August 17 at 24 degrees Aquarius, visible from the Pacific and the Americas. As with the other two lunar eclipses this year, the shading is faint and many people will not notice it. With the Sun in Leo and the Moon in Aquarius, this full Moon pulls between personal wants and group needs, setting your own creative plans against friends, communities and causes. Coming two weeks after the total eclipse, it often shows what the new start of August 2 means for the people around you. It also returns to Aquarius, the sign of the annular eclipse on February 6, so themes from early in the year, especially around friendships, teams and long-term goals, may come back for a final decision. This full Moon closes the Leo and Aquarius eclipse story of 2027, and the next eclipses fall in 2028.

2027 eclipse questions
When are the eclipses in 2027?
There are five eclipses in 2027: an annular solar eclipse on February 6 in Aquarius, a penumbral lunar eclipse on February 20 in Virgo, a penumbral lunar eclipse on July 18 in Capricorn, a total solar eclipse on August 2 in Leo, and a penumbral lunar eclipse on August 17 in Aquarius. Dates are in US Eastern time. The total solar eclipse on August 2 is the main event of the year.
Where can you see the August 2, 2027 total solar eclipse?
The path of totality crosses Morocco, Spain, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia, with up to 6 minutes 23 seconds of totality at its longest. Outside that path, a partial eclipse, where the Moon covers only part of the Sun, is visible across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and western and southern Asia.
Which zodiac signs are most affected by the 2027 eclipses?
Leo and Aquarius are the most affected, because three of the five eclipses fall in those signs: the total solar eclipse in Leo on August 2 and the Aquarius eclipses on February 6 and August 17. Virgo and Capricorn each have one lunar eclipse in their sign. Taurus and Scorpio, whose charts put Leo and Aquarius on their home and career houses, also tend to feel these eclipses strongly.
Is the February 20, 2027 lunar eclipse visible?
Yes, from the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia, but it is a penumbral eclipse, so the change is subtle. The Moon only passes through the faint outer part of Earth's shadow and dims a little on one side. Unless you know to look for it, it will look like a normal full Moon, and it does not turn red.
Are eclipses bad luck in astrology?
No. Astrologers read eclipses as markers of change, and change can go either way. An eclipse tends to bring things that were already building to the surface, and the effects usually play out over several months. The usual advice is to notice which area of your chart an eclipse falls in and to avoid forcing big decisions in the days right around it, while things are still moving.
