What Mercury retrograde means

Mercury retrograde is an optical effect. Mercury orbits the Sun faster than Earth, and when it passes between Earth and the Sun it appears, from where we stand, to slow down, stop and drift backward against the stars for about three weeks. The planet never reverses its orbit. The point where it seems to stop is called a station, which is why astrologers say Mercury stations retrograde and, three weeks later, stations direct.

In astrology Mercury rules communication, short travel, paperwork, technology and the way you think things through. The traditional reading of a retrograde is that these areas slow down or need a second look: messages go astray, plans shift, devices act up, and signing a contract you haven't read closely is a worse idea than usual. Mercury goes retrograde three or four times every year, and most of daily life carries on as normal while it does. The sensible response is to leave more time for travel and admin and to check details before you commit.

February 9 to March 3: Mercury retrograde in Pisces and Aquarius

The first retrograde begins on February 9 at 6 degrees Pisces and ends on March 3 at 20 degrees Aquarius. In Pisces, Mercury thinks in impressions more than lists, and the first nine days can bring vague messages, misread tone and plans that blur at the edges, so write things down and confirm what was agreed. On February 18 Mercury moves back into Aquarius, and the focus shifts to groups, networks and technology: group chats, online accounts, software updates and plans made with friends or colleagues. This retrograde starts three days after the annular solar eclipse of February 6 in Aquarius, and the penumbral lunar eclipse of February 20 falls in the middle of it, which makes February a busy month in the sky. Expect long-term plans, and the people you share them with, to come up for review. Mercury returns to Pisces on March 18 and clears its shadow on March 23.

June 10 to July 4: Mercury retrograde in Cancer and Gemini

The second retrograde runs from June 10, at 6 degrees Cancer, to July 4, at 27 degrees Gemini. Cancer is the sign of home and family, so the first two weeks tend to bring conversations with relatives, household logistics and old memories to the surface. A move, a renovation or a family arrangement may need another round of talks before it settles. On June 26 Mercury backs into Gemini, the sign it rules, and the retrograde turns to everyday communication: emails, short trips, siblings, neighbors and the amount of information coming at you. Mercury is quick in Gemini, and during a retrograde that speed causes the trouble, such as replying before reading the whole message, double-booking or losing track of small promises. This period overlaps with summer travel in the Northern Hemisphere, so build slack into itineraries and keep confirmations handy. Mercury re-enters Cancer on July 12 and leaves the shadow on July 19.

October 7 to October 28: Mercury retrograde in Scorpio and Libra

The third retrograde starts on October 7 at 4 degrees Scorpio and ends on October 28 at 19 degrees Libra. Scorpio is the sign of shared money, secrets and the things people prefer not to say out loud. In the first nine days, conversations about debt, joint finances, taxes or trust can resurface, and information that was held back may come out. On October 16 Mercury moves back into Libra, and attention turns to partnerships, agreements and fairness. Of the three, this is the retrograde most associated with contracts: terms you thought were settled may need another look, and a partner may want to revisit something you both agreed to. Libra is also the sign of balance, so the second half of the period suits weighing both sides of a decision before you act. Mercury goes back into Scorpio on November 9 and finishes its shadow on November 13, closing the last retrograde cycle of 2027.

The shadow periods

Each retrograde has a shadow period on both sides. The pre-shadow begins when Mercury first reaches the degree where it will later station direct, and the post-shadow ends when it moves back past the degree where it turned retrograde. Mercury crosses that stretch of the zodiac three times, so astrologers read the shadow as the time when a retrograde's themes first appear and then finally settle. In 2027 the shadow periods run from January 25 to March 23, from May 26 to July 19 and from September 17 to November 13. The pre-shadow is a good time to tie up loose ends, and the post-shadow is when delayed plans usually start moving again.
